Coolie is a new action movie directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj. It stars the superstar Rajinikanth and released on August 14, 2025. The story follows Deva, played by Rajinikanth, who is a former coolie now running a hostel. He gets pulled into a big fight against smugglers after his friend’s death. The villains include Simon, acted by Nagarjuna, and his tough helper Dayal, played by Soubin Shahir. There are also roles for Shruti Haasan as Preethi, and short appearances by Aamir Khan and Upendra.
Rajinikanth is the main highlight. At 74, he still has amazing energy and style. His action scenes and dialogues make fans cheer loudly. He carries the movie with his charm. Soubin Shahir does a great job as the scary bad guy, stealing some scenes. Nagarjuna looks cool but his character could have been stronger. Shruti Haasan is okay, but her role feels simple, like she needs saving a lot. The cameos add fun but don’t change the story much.
The movie has strong points in its fights and music. Anirudh Ravichander’s songs and background score keeps things exciting. The camera work by Girish Gangadharan shows nice visuals, especially in action parts. But the story feels messy sometimes. The first half is slow, with too many ideas that don’t connect well. The second half picks up with more thrills, but the whole film runs almost three hours and could be shorter.
Lokesh Kanagaraj tries to mix his dark style with Rajinikanth’s big-hero image, but it doesn’t always work. It’s like a lighter version of his hit Vikram. For Rajinikanth fans, Coolie is a fun watch full of mass moments and nostalgia. Casual viewers might find it average because of the weak plot and over-the-top violence. Overall, it’s entertaining but not perfect. I give it 3 out of 5 stars. If you love action and the superstar, go see it!
