In a heartbreaking turn of events, Delta State University (DSU) in Cleveland, Mississippi, has been thrust into mourning following the discovery of a student’s body on campus. The incident, which occurred on the very day the university was set to kick off its centennial celebrations, has led to the cancellation of all classes and events. As investigations continue, authorities have emphasized that there is no evidence of foul play and no ongoing threat to the community. Here’s what we know so far about this developing story.
The Discovery and Initial Response
Early Monday morning, September 15, 2025, at approximately 7:05 a.m., DSU staff notified university police of a body found hanging from a tree near the central campus pickleball courts. The deceased was identified as 21-year-old Demartravion “Trey” Reed, a student from Grenada, Mississippi. Reed, described as a Black male, was pronounced dead at the scene.
DSU Police Chief Michael L. Peeler addressed the media in a press conference, stating that preliminary findings point to suicide, with no indications of foul play. “Delta State University is a beautiful place to be. It’s just unfortunate, this loss that comes heavy to our campus,” Peeler said, reassuring the community of campus safety. The Bolivar County Coroner’s Office recovered the body, and an autopsy is expected to provide further details.
In response, DSU President Dr. Daniel J. Ennis announced the immediate cancellation of all classes and public events for the day, including those tied to the university’s 100th anniversary celebration. The centennial kickoff, marking exactly 100 years since the institution opened its doors in 1925, was postponed amid the tragedy. The university issued a statement expressing deep sadness and confirming that Reed’s next of kin had been notified.
Ongoing Investigation
While initial assessments suggest no criminal activity, multiple agencies have been enlisted to ensure a thorough probe. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI), Bolivar County Sheriff’s Office, and Cleveland Police Department are assisting DSU police.
