Evergreen, CO – September 11, 2025
A tragic shooting occurred at Evergreen High School in Jefferson County, Colorado, on September 10, 2025, leaving two students wounded and the suspected shooter, a male student, dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The incident, which took place around 12:24 p.m. local time, has shaken the tight-knit community located approximately 30 miles southwest of Denver.

According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, the shooter, a 16-year-old male student at the school, used a revolver to fire shots both inside and outside the school building. Two students were critically injured and transported to Common Spirit St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood. As of Wednesday evening, one victim remained in critical condition, while the other was upgraded to stable condition and transferred to another facility. A fourth individual may have been transported to a hospital, though details regarding their condition or involvement remain unclear.

Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Jacki Kelley reported that law enforcement responded swiftly, arriving at the scene within minutes of the first 911 call. Over 100 officers from various agencies, including the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, assisted in securing the school and investigating the incident. No law enforcement officers fired their weapons during the response. The school, which enrolls over 900 students, was placed on lockdown, and students were evacuated to Bergen Meadow Elementary for reunification with their families.

Governor Jared Polis expressed his devastation, stating, “My heart goes out to the victims and their families as they grapple with this senseless act of violence. Students should be able to attend school safely and without fear across our state and nation.” Colorado U.S. Senator Michael Bennet also voiced his horror, thanking law enforcement for their rapid response. Jeffco Public Schools Superintendent Tracy Dorland emphasized the district’s commitment to safety, saying, “No child should ever face this kind of danger, and no community should be asked to absorb this kind of pain.”

The shooting has reignited painful memories for Jefferson County, home to Columbine High School, where a 1999 massacre claimed 13 lives. The Jefferson County Education Association noted that the tragedy retraumatizes a community still healing from past violence, stating, “We cannot accept this as normal. We demand meaningful action to end the epidemic of gun violence in our schools.”

Investigators are working to determine the motive behind the shooting, examining the suspect’s home, locker, and other belongings. Sheriff Reggie Marinelli described the incident as a “tragic day” for the county, urging residents to avoid the school grounds to allow for a thorough investigation. Classes at Evergreen High School and other schools in the Evergreen and Conifer areas were canceled for Thursday, with plans for Friday to be announced later.

A vigil was planned for Wednesday evening at Flatirons Community Church in Golden to support the community. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Victim Services Unit will provide resources and mental health support at Bergen Meadow Elementary on Thursday and Friday.

This incident marks the 13th school shooting in Colorado since Columbine, according to 9News, and comes amid a national tally of 44 school shootings in 2025, as reported by Newsweek. The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities committed to uncovering the circumstances that led to this devastating event.
